What is a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is a translation of an official document carried out exclusively by an accredited translator. In other words, it is a translation that is legally valid before any official body.
The professional who carries out a sworn translation is known as a sworn translator-interpreter. Their translations are valid throughout Spain and in most foreign countries. However, sometimes this document must be presented together with a certificate known as a Hague Apostille. Our team is made up of official translators who will enable you to carry out your formalities with the various governmental bodies.

When is an official sworn translation required?
Sworn translations are usually required to make a written document officially valid in the eyes of the various agencies, institutions or other organisations of a country other than the country that issued the original document. In some cases, the authority in question does not accept ordinary translations, that is to say, translations without the required certification which only a sworn translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation can provide.
Who can produce sworn translations?
Today, there are two ways in which the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation recognises translators as officially qualified to produce sworn translations: either the translator must pass a language exam at the Spanish Office of Language Interpretation (involving a series of language tests), or the translator must have an officially recognised qualification from another country within the European Economic Area.
These translations are only valid when they are performed by a Sworn Translator and Interpreter who has previously been authorised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and therefore has the necessary qualifications to offer the guarantees required by law. Sworn translations will always be official and can be provided to all kinds of judicial and administrative bodies. They are just as valid as the original document in the foreign language.Estas traducciones solo tendrán plena validez cuando sean realizadas por un Traductor e Intérprete Jurado que previamente ha sido habilitado para ello por el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación y, por tanto, posee el nombramiento necesario para ofrecer las garantías que exige la ley. Tendrán siempre carácter oficial, pudiendo aportarse ante todos los órganos judiciales y administrativos, con la misma validez que el documento original escrito en una lengua extranjera.
What is the difference between a sworn translation and an ordinary translation?
The difference between an official sworn translation and an ordinary translation is that the first one must be physically delivered on paper bearing the sworn translator’s signature and stamp. All our sworn translations are legally valid for use in your administrative processes.
What does an official sworn translation include?
An official sworn translation is an accurate reproduction of the original document. Any stamps, notes, signatures or any kind of information contained in the original are also translated. This means that not only is the text translated in its entirety, but so are any visual features. In addition, all sworn or sworn translations must include a statement or oath from the translator certifying that the translation is an official translation. At WTA Language Solutions, we always deliver sworn translations on official paper that has been signed and stamped by the accredited translator.
What is an Apostille?
Apostille is a method of legalising documents that is used to certify their authenticity. An Apostille is a piece of paper that is attached to a public document and then stamped by the authority. Apostille certification, which confirms that the signatures contained in the original document for translation are genuine, always comes prior to sworn translation.
In general, all official documents must be legalised with an Apostille. However, when performing an official sworn translation, it is not compulsory to also perform a sworn translation of the Apostille.
How are sworn translations delivered?
Our sworn translations are always delivered through a courier service (you can track the delivery from start to finish). However, if you prefer, you can also collect the documents in person from our office.
How can I request a quote for a sworn translation service?
You can request a quote for a sworn translation service through our website or by email. We can also answer any questions you may have by telephone; we’re here to help you and guide you throughout the entire process, to ensure you receive your sworn translation quickly and seamlessly. Here at WTA Language Solutions we’d be glad to send you a no-obligation quote (including the translation delivery fee, because you’ll need to provide the institution in question with the original certificate).
In order to provide you with a quote for an official sworn translation, we will need to see the documents. These can be scanned (both sides of the pages must be included, along with any stamps or signatures certifying the original document) or delivered in person to our offices in Madrid.
The final quote amount will always depend on the length of the document to be translated and the requested language combination. If it is a short document, we apply a minimum fee. If it is a longer document (such as a company’s annual accounts), we apply a rate per word. In any case, all our quotes are personalised to meet the needs of our clients, whether they are individuals or businesses.
When you rely on our document translation services, you’ll not only save time and money but you’ll also save yourself a lot of trouble.
What is the turnaround time for a sworn translation?
We ask that you tell us when you need the translation, so we can meet your deadline. This is in line with our primary objectives of flexibility, speed and quality. Our goal as a translation agency is to help you complete any administrative processes that require a sworn translation, from the comfort of your own home, in as short a time as possible, and with the guarantees you need. We know the authorities don’t always make it easy, but at WTA Language Solutions, we are here to help.
